Sled Milwaukee

I went sledding with Ella and some friends.  The light was tricky — snow, setting sun, and black coats.  It was getting dark.  I went with ISO 500 and fired away.

Yosemite National Park

Yesterday, while commuting to work on AirTran we were treated to this fantastic view of Yosemite National Park.  Most flights approaching San Francisco from the east fly directly over Yosemite.  I’ve flown over Yosemite close to 100 times.  Normally, there is some haze or a cloud layer and I don’t bother trying a photo — not this time.  Yesterday morning was the best lighting for an aerial photo of Yosemite that I’ve ever seen.  In the lower right you can see Half Dome, and on the left end of the canyon you can see El Capitan.  Look really close and you’ll be able to pick out Yosemite falls.

Here is another view of the Yosemite Valley.  This picture does a pretty good job describing the geography of the canyon.  At the top of the frame you can see the peaks of the High Sierras.  The Sierra’s rise gradually from west to east out of the San Joaquin Valley.  Most of the bottom portion of the frame is the gentle slope of the western Sierras.  The Yosemite Canyon is a deep gash cutting through the high country.

More Mountain Snow

Here’s another view of fresh snow on the Rocky Mountains.  This is the front range just north and west of Denver.  I labeled Longs Peak so you could get your bearings.  Anyone that has ever been to Rocky Mountain National Park has heard of Longs Peak.  Here is a photo of me on top of Longs Peak taken a few summers back.  I brag about climbing Longs Peak every chance I can get.

Jack Loses His Stick

Gatsby swipes Jack’s stick.  It’s payback time.

Flying High Again

35,000 feet above Northeastern Utah we pass underneath  a westbound Southwest  Airlines 737.  It’s cold on the other side of the window, -50 degrees C.  The earth’s atmosphere is a rather thin blanket against the dark void of space.  The storm that proceeded this arctic air painted a wide brushstroke of snow from the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California all the way to Upstate New York.

This is the Sand Hills region of Nebraska the day after the blizzard.

My technical problems have been solved.  I should be posting again regularly.  With any luck this blog will once again be as successful and bloated as Ozzy Osbourne circa 1982

The State of Utah Should be Paying Me

january-2009-sunset-above-utahwp

Is this Utah week? I have to admit that I am getting tired of scrolling down my blog and seeing one after another aerial photos of Utah covered in snow, but I can’t resist posting another. I got this photo yesterday while flying from Las Vegas to New York (again). The sun was setting and our jumpseat rider was yammering on and on about how he once stood up to the base chief pilot. Blah Blah Blah. Meanwhile, I was getting some great shots of the desert ridges below.

I have one more shot from yesterday that I want to post, and we are flying to Vegas again today. Look out for more Utah shots.
